     John Groat was born circa 1832.2 He was the son of James Groat and Isabella Gerry.2 John Groat was born circa 1833 at Auchengills, Thurso, Caithenss, .3 He married Christina Bain, daughter of George Bain and Margaret Swanson, on 28 April 1857 at Thurso, Caithness, .1 John Groat was a labourer before 30 April 1858 at Thurso, Caithness, .2 He lived before 30 April 1858 at Auchingill, Thurso, Caithness, .2 He married Christina Bain, daughter of George Bain and Margaret Swanson, on 30 April 1858 at Thurso, Caithness, ; after banns according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland by W Ross Taylor, Minister. The witnesses were Alexander McKAy and James McAdie.2 He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census at Newton of Auchengills, Thurso, Caithenss, ,, when the family of four was living in one room.3 John Groat was an agricultural labourer on 8 April 1861 at Newton of Auchengills, Thurso, Caithenss, .3 His wife Christina died on 19 February 1869 at Achingill, Thurso, Caithness, , at age 30; at 10.00 pm. The cause of death was acute phthisis which had lasted 2 months; certified by James Mill, surgeon and registered by her brother George.4 John Groat registered the death of his mother-in-law Margaret Swanson on 11 January 1886 at Auchingills, Thurso, Caithness, ; at 8.00 pm. The cause of death was chronic bronchitis which had lasted 2 months; certified by P C Arnott, physician & surgeon in Thurson and registered by her son-in-law, John Groat.5,6
